In the most inconvenient way

Daphne always loved how her fiancé, Peter, told their story. How they met (on a windy day), how they fell in love (thanks to a runaway hat), and how they moved back to his hometown, on the shore of a lake, to start their life together. He was really good at storytelling... until she realized he had actually fallen for his childhood best friend, Petra.

And so begins a new story for Daphne: stuck in charming Waning Bay, Michigan, with no friends or family, but with a dream job as a children's librarian (from which she barely pays her bills) and becoming roommates with the only person who could resonate with her predicament: Petra's ex-boyfriend, Miles Nowak.

Messy and chaotic – with a penchant for sad love songs – Miles is the exact opposite of Daphne, the practical and inhibited one, about whom her co-workers know so little that they bet she either works for the FBI or is in witness protection.

The two roommates avoid each other until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they lay the groundwork for a fragile friendship and a plan. And if the so-called plan also involves posting intentionally misleading photos taken during summer adventures spent together, well, who could blame them? But it's all just for show, of course, because Daphne wouldn't start a new chapter by falling for her ex-fiancé's new fiancée's ex-boyfriend... would she?
